French Post-Impressionist Painter, 1865-1938 French painter and artist's model. She led a lonely childhood in Paris as the daughter of an unmarried and unaffectionate maid, seeking refuge from her bleak circumstances by living in a dream world. While residing in the Montmartre district of Paris, she became an artist's model, working in particular with those painters who frequented the Lapin Agile. From 1880 to 1887, for example, she sat regularly for Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, posing for both the male and female figures in the Sacred Wood (1884-6; Lyon, Mus. B.-A.). She also modelled for Renoir, Luigi Zandomeneghi, Th?ophile Steinlein, Jean-Louis Forain, Giuseppe De Nittis and Jean-Jacques Henner. No longer able to tolerate the passive role of the model,

1805, Vienna - 1880, Vienna,Austrian painter and lithographer. He entered the Vienna Akademie at the age of ten, studying sculpture under Josef Klieber and landscape painting (1817-20) with Joseph Messmer (1780-1845), from whom he also learnt the new technique of lithography. He then spent three years with Johann Baptist Lampi (i) and Franz Caucig (1762-1828), drawing after antique statues and casts. He studied history painting (1823-8), during which period he came under the influence of Johann Peter Krafft, who introduced him to the principles of realism, suggesting that he work directly from nature and reflect contemporary, everyday subject-matter in his painting. Karel skreta
(1610, Prague - July 30, 1674, Prague) was a Czech Baroque painter. Karel learnt painting perhaps from one of the masters at the royal courtyard. He studied in Saxony and in Italy. According to Houbraken he painted portraits and lived together with the respected watercolor painter Willem Bouwer in Rome. He became a member of the Bentvueghels with the nickname Slagzwaart or Slach-sweerd.According to the RKD he was the teacher of the Prague painter Johann Georg Heinsch (1640-1713). Since 1638 he lived in Prague, where he worked on altarpieces for many churches, for example St. Thomas, St. Stephen or the Church of Our Lady in front of Týn.
